Cape Cod’s Bursley Manor: Your Family’s Perfectly Central Vacation Hub

Welcome to the Bursley Manor, a West Barnstable mainstay since 1670, when John Bursley built it as the homestead to his thriving Maple Spring Dairy. Today, the Manor encapsulates the charm and elegance of a bygone era, with tasteful and comfortable decor, five fireplaces, and wide pine floors throughout. There are eight bedrooms and four lounges – two with full sofa beds – as well as 7.5 baths, two kitchens, two laundry rooms and two patios. Pristine Sandy Neck Beach is just two miles away!

Book the entire Manor using the Compound option, or choose one or more of its three separate components below:

Highland Lighthouse, one of 14 to explore on the Cape Cod

Farmhouse

The first component is the luxurious Farmhouse, the dairy’s homestead. It offers five ensuite bedrooms, a huge chef’s kitchen, two lounges, and a powder room that hides the laundry behind a curtain. It has four fireplaces, its own patio and outdoor shower, & views of the pond to the north & the Manor gardens to the south.

Captain’s Quarters

The Captain’s Quarters is the second component, an apartment added to the southeast corner of the Farmhouse in the 1800s. It has two bedrooms and a lounge with a pull-out bed, a laundry room, and a bathroom.

Sea Glass

The final component is Sea Glass, an open-plan tiny house that was also added in the 1800s as the Bursley Manor’s carriage house. It offers a kitchen, bath, a wood stove and a lounge area on the first floor. Up the spiral staircase on the second floor are a TV lounge and a double bed.

Your Host

Hi, I’m your host, Margaret Rankin. I’m a journalist and communications specialist who moved to Cape Cod and opened a B&B. I’ve lived in 12 countries around the world and love getting to know people and their stories.

The Bursley Manor has been an engaging and rewarding experience since I bought it in 2018. It’s a home with its own welcoming aspect, and exudes an air of contentment when it’s full of kids and pets. I spent most of the first year restoring the building and grounds, and reopened for a great first season in summer 2019: The Manor was rated at 9.6 on a scale of 10 by booking.com, and 4.6 out of 5 by Expedia.

With the advent of the pandemic, I converted the Manor to a family vacation rental on Airbnb. I then hosted a succession of large families, all of whom rated their Bursley Manor experience at 5 stars.

This year I hope to stay open year-round, offering themed bookings, holiday stays, and getaway packages for the off-season months. Like the idea of New England leaf-peeping followed by a fireside chat? Maybe a murder-mystery dinner? I’m open to your ideas!

“Margaret is a wonderful person. She is so welcoming and makes you feel at home. She even made dinner reservations for us our first night there for our anniversary. I loved the room we stayed in downstairs. It was very inviting and warm. Beautifully decorated.
